Our ethos
Our courses are grounded in one theoretical model, the Person Centred Approach. This approach to counselling
and helping relationships was developed by Carl Rogers, and falls within the humanistic school of psychology.
The Person Centred Approach places trust in the client’s ability to discover their own solutions when the counsellor provides a relationship based on genuine understanding and acceptance of the client and her experience.
Rogers discovered that the Person Centred Approach applies to any interpersonal relationship for example
teacher-student, employer-employee, parent-child. We, therefore, adopt a Person Centred Approach to our work
with students, in order to promote their growth and development as individuals and as counsellors.
“Person-centered counselling is a way of being with people based on a particular theory of helping relationships which, in turn, rests on a deep respect for and trust in the individual’s capacity for growth, development and creativity.
..... its theory of counselling relationships is based on the presence of certain personal qualities, attitudes and values.
It is a democratic, non-authoritarian approach to people that emphasises a constructive human relationship as the key to the change process.”

We believe that courses, particularly counselling diplomas, need to be grounded in one specific theory/model, which creates a solid foundation for the therapeutic relationship, leading to consistent, integrated and ethical counselling practice. The Person Centred Approach is the model that informs our work and our ethos.
We believe that our courses not only give students a high standard of counselling training, they also provide experiential learning that impacts on their personal development and their lives, improving their relationships with family and friends, and in the workplace.
